There's been a lot of talk around the interwebs about all the new teams joining up in MLS. Everyone's been oohing and awwing about their fans and how wonderful they are blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong It's nice too see the packed stadiums and it's great to see the excitement around the league, however... If there is one thing that drives me crazy, is the contempt that these new fans seem to show for their forebears. They're joining a league as it is reaching peak popularity and standing on the shoulders of the hard work put in by the league's original '96 clubs. So to honor the legacy of The Massive Club. THE original team in MLS here's a new piece of wallpaper propaganda adorned with the names of just a few of the Crew's stand out players.

This was the first game in over a year that I did not take in from the Nordecke. Instead I was on the stage enjoying the beer garden and view from behind the goal. Crew vs TFC: View from the Bar

So finally after over a month without my own laptop I finally have it back. This is a soccer blog so I won't go into the details of my ordeal but lets just say I will never be buying a Dell Computer again after all of that hassle. Onto the game!

It was finally that time of year again, The Massive club were taking on Terrible FC up in the land of ice and snow. This yearly guarantee of at least a point on the road came a good time of the year, Easter Weekend. This meant the usually small crowds that are associated with this were not our problem and we could watch from the comfort of our local bars. I took in the game down at the Hudson Street Hooligans bar on Summit and Oakland. The bar is a members only club that can be joined for just 20 bucks, for which you plenty of goodies to make it worth the trouble. I highly recommend checking it out sometime if you get the chance, It is the only supporters owned bar in the USA and a great place to catch a game.

Technical Difficulties

So I haven't been posting a lot lately and there is a reason for it; my Computer has totally crapped out on me. The poor old gal is five, very rough, years old and has been broken for a few days now. So while I wait for it to get back from Dell all fixed and new I've been relegated to an old mac which I do not like very much. The result is me not being able to mess around on my photo editor and come up with new imagery right as the season gets started. So please do bear with me I should be up and cranking out new stuff in a week or so and I will try to come up with some other content (most likely videos or photos) and post them from here as well.

I've left them black and white this time since that'll pry be easier for stencils or projectors when making them.

Preseason Blues

March 19th marks the start of the 2011 MLS season for the Columbus Crew and for neurotic fans, like myself, this is both an exciting and stressful time. It's a time when we start to find out what this team is really like, and if what we've seen up to this point in preseason really matters.

Now normally I'd say preseason results are largely meaningless in any sport, and even more so in MLS. The games are played by weird grab bag rules with unlimited subs, 30 to 60 minute periods and all sorts of guest and trail players. Usually this makes the preseason nothing more than glorified try outs. This year though feels a bit different. Perhaps its because of the massive roster overhaul,or perhaps it's because it was early start back in the CCL, but this year preseason feels like it matters. The new look Crew of 2011 has no real identity, and it would seem these preseason games would be the time to establish one.

The trouble has been a plague of injuries sweeping through the locker room. Having key guys like Marshall, Hesmer, Gaven, O'Rourke, Francis and Gruenebaum out means that the new guys are left on their own to figure out who this team really is. This of course isn't exactly groundbreaking news, but it's exactly the kind of stressful situation that makes preseason so draining. Crew fans are notoriously bi-polar (spending just a few weeks on the bigsoccer.com message boards can show that to anyone)and having your team get beaten repeatedly with a corps of new players is no help for our fragile psyches.

Couple these beatings with a miserable away leg in the CCL and a lack of any signings that are known commodities and a dreadful outlook tends to sneak in.

The only saving grace maybe in the knowledge that this has happened before. In 2008 the team had a average to sub-par preseason, and had just come off three straight disappointing seasons. Yet that Crew was able to rally and become one of the best teams in MLS history.

Do I think this year will be a repeat of that magic? Of course not.
But I can hope that some sort of middle ground is found and this team can prove that I had no need to worry or have these preseason blues.

Tifo Ideas: Nordecke on Tour

Columbus Legends: Duncan Oughton

Duncan Oughton is a true Columbus Legend. He spent his entire career with the Massive club and made Columbus his adopted home. A true fan favorite when not showing off his skills on the pitch he was making people laugh off of it. His sense of humor and personable nature helped him become part of the heart and soul of the team. While he has retired from his playing days he has moved up to the Crew Front Office continuing his work in helping Columbus stay Massive.

Going over the top: Columbus' set piece battles

Over the last few seasons there has been one main way for The Crew to net goals: set pieces. Back in 2008 the service of Schelotto and the Ariel prowess of players like Chad Marshall and Alejandro Moreno made corner kicks and final third fouls a dangerous proposition for those opposing the Black and Gold. This high flying attack wasn't the only means of production though. The Crew could still count on goals from the run of play to keep teams honest and prompt those dangerous fouls. The Crew could keep the game moving but still hit hard when the opposition forced a stoppage. In 2009 this fell off but did not entirely disappear letting the team scrape out another supporters shield despite a poor finish to the season. Year two of the Robert Warzycha project though saw the well all but run dry. The Massive club became almost entirely reliant on set piece goals to keep them in matches as the team struggled to find the net from the run of play. This predictability became a major liability, in 2010 if you could stop the set pieces you could stop Columbus.

Since the end of last season the team has undergone a major overhaul. Warzycha is no longer looking to be pegged to lining up in formation and charging headlong for the cross the way he had in season past. The plan is to switch from the classical set piece engagements that got the team bogged down to a more rapid war of movement. Think of it as going from WWI to WWII, from trenches to blitzkrieg. The problem however will lie in it's implementation. Switching styles is never an easy task, the culture of lining up and waiting for the whistle to send you up and over an opponent may have taken too deep of root to work out quickly. The result of which could be a slow and painful start to the season for fans of the Massive club. Given the early results in the preseason many fans may begin to wonder if we're adapting properly. In the first two matches all the Crew's goals have once again come from Set pieces. The question then is when will we see the change in style that was promised after the off-season purge. With limited time and options before the first match against Salt Lake it is unlikely the teams new tactics will be on full display. Warzycha will likely have to "attack the enemy's strategy" as Sun Tzu would say. He'll have to tailor the Crew to take on the Royals before he can tailor the Crew to be the Crew. Something that maybe a problem given his desire to totally shift the team's style and the limited time before First Kick. The good news things are still in their very early stages. The Crew won their third preseason match 3-0 with both Mendoza and Cunningham scoring. Not to mention that often times preseason is a poor indicator of how a team will actually play during the season. However given the frustration last year and with the first Champions League match less than two weeks away people are understandably nervous. They don't want to see another season stuck in the trenches and being forced to go over the top.

Columbus Legends: Frankie Hejduk

Frankie Hejduk embodies the spirit of the Massive; he works hard, he tackles hard, he runs hard, and he plays hard. While he no longer plays in Columbus, when someone asks you to picture the Captain of the Crew this is who most of you probably think of. His years of dedication to the team, his unstoppable work rate, his goal in MLS Cup 08 and his beers in the Nordecke. While he's finishing out his career in LA back near his california roots he has said he plans on making his adopted city his home in life after soccer. The man embodies what it means to be a Crew player and for his time with us he will always be a Columbus Legend.

Columbus Legends: Guillermo Barros Schelotto

I've decided to do a string of Wallpapers dedicated to the greatest men to have donned the Black and Gold. Each will be unique to the player and commemorate his time with the club. To kick things off I'm starting with the man, the myth, the legend; Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Guille joined the club mid-season 2007 and went on to become one of the most Iconic figures in Columbus Crew history. The sublime argentine was named the 2008 MLS Regular season and MLS cup MVP helping to earn Three pieces of hardware in his time with the Massive. Though his contract was not renewed at the start of the season he will always be a fan favorite and arguably the best player ever to wear the uniform. So here's to Barros Schelotto, Columbus' #7 and a true Crew Legend.

One of the pleasant surprises last season was the play of Emilio Renteria. The Venezuelan Bulldog powered his way through defenses and put in the work to notch Five goals and earn the adoration of many Crew fans. His strength, hustle, skill and memorable celebrations can now be honored by having him adorn your desktop. Hopefully 2011 will see many more calls on the shoe phone or dances by the corner flag.

The many faces of Jeff Cunningham

One of the Crew's prodigal sons, Jeff Cunningham has returned home. Signing a few days ago with the club to a multi-year deal that will undoubtedly see him break not only the Crew scoring record but that of Major League Soccer as well. Over on the Columbus Crew offical website they have a lovely story and a lovely picture of our boy Jefro. But seeing how Jeff is a many of many faces, (and lately many clubs) I figured It'd be worth posting several more pictures of the soon to be record breaking striker so we here in the Capital City can get acquainted with our favorite love him or hate him striker.

Propaganda: Be Massive

We've all seen the posters, "Keep Calm and Carry On". The prototypical English attitude that was meant to be plastered all over the streets of the UK had their island been invaded by the Nazis. Thankfully we're under no threat of an invasion here in Ohio but we can still enjoy some good old fashioned propaganda plastered all over our Computer Screens. Back to Work

The Massive club is getting back to work today. After a nice, and a bit too long, winter break it was finally time or the boys to get back to practice at the SuperKick indoor facilities. The Crew's two picks from the supplemental draft and international Sebastian Miranda were not present for the first practice but Last year's pick Kwaku Nyamekye ,who missed last season, was in attendance. Given the expanded roster size and Front office's familiarity with Nyamekye from training with him last year expect to see him as a permanent part of the roster this season.

Other notes, the Crew re-signed under used midfielder Leandre Griffit this week as well.

Who are the Crew?

A whimper not a bang.
That was how the 2010 season ended for the Massive Club. Brian Carroll's tragically missed PK sent the would be champion Rapids onto the next round and left the black and gold faithful in stunned silence. The off season however would be a completely different story. The Crew Front Office hit the ground running and have totally blown up the roster that brought them an MLS Cup in 2008, having sent more heads rolling than the french revolution.(though the FO promises us this isn't a rebuild) While many aren't happy with the way the team went about the process of gutting the club, the simple fact is that many of our beloved legends such as Guillermo, Frankie and St.Duncan weren't what they used to be. Our judgment on their playing abilities is forever compromised. Our heads are full of moments like Duncan's Bike ride up in Rochester, or Frankie's MLS Cup goal off that Magical Guille pass, we're fatally biased. What happened in many ways needed to happen, though that doesn't mean the problems left behind aren't worth getting upset over.

The biggest problem in their departure is less about what they brought on the field and more about what they brought off of it. Those three men were the face of the Columbus Crew. They made the Massive Club, massive.
The new band of players that will take the field for Columbus next year seem to lack that same soul that had been present in those men. They brought passion and leadership to the team, they were Icons. Frankie, Guille, Dunc's and BC were the four men who regularly wore the armband when they were on the field and now they're gone. Add to that the fact that an emerging fan favorite and face of the team, Lenhart, is now gone as well. [Say what you will about his finishing, but the man was active in the community and was a boon the the Locker Room] The old guard of leaders and the identity that the team had formed around them has left, and The 2011 Crew right now are shaping up to be a rock group without a frontman.

Not all is lost though, The Crew as a team still have a solid core to build around. Guys like Hesmer, Marshall, Gaven, Rogers, Ekpo, and Francis are all players good enough to keep the team going. The problem is that everyone of those men is a humble team player. I know that sounds strange but it's true. The players left at the core of the team lack the panache that we all knew in loved in our fallen legends. Guillermo was a crafty puppet master who could do anything with the ball, Frankie was the never say die surfer who could run for days, and St. Duncs was the Comic Kiwi and longest tenured veteran. They were the guys the team built it's identity around. The ones who people came to see and the community associated with this team.

There are still some players left who have the potential to step into the spotlight and grab the Mic. Guys like O'rourke, and Renteria have the personality, but aren't as universally loved. Also New players like Heinemann seem to have the personality that can quickly endear a player to fans. New players are still yet to be acquired as well The Crew are still far from having filled out it's roster for the start of the season and someone will have to step up to fill the void. The test will be time. Results speak volumes, and for a team that's being put back together like the Crew a new identity has to emerge. For the sake of the fans hopefully it emerges quickly and we find an answer to the question, Who can make Columbus, massive again?

It's been quite some time since I've posted anything on here. There's no real reason for why I've been away, just out being busy for the most part. However I do plan on updating much more frequently now that I've found more time. I also plan on reworking the blog to be better than before and with different content beyond the imagery. Whether this keeps up or I once again fall into the trap of laziness will become apparent in the coming weeks, but seeing as we're deep in the heart of the MLS off season I figure now is a good time to ease back into the swing of things. This is the first film to be put out by Columbus Ultra Films. I plan on creating many more highlight reels and even some more original content this season to provide Crew fans with well produced video content about their favorite team.

This first film is all about the spirit of The Massive.
It is assembled from clips and photos from other crew fans and using the music of Johnny Cash's "Gods Gonna cut you Down". The Quote that opens the video is by Michael Arace of the Columbus dispatch on what it means to be Massive and can be found in it's full version in the side column of my blog.

I've been meaning to do this for some time now but just haven't had the time until lately; the Videos being put out by the Columbus Crew FO have been pretty damn fantastic. They've really stepped up their game, putting out player interviews, behind the scenes tidbits, and highlight reels that have been Grade A. I really recommend wandering over to their youtube channel and checking everything out if ya get the chance. If not then here are a couple that are definitely worth a few minutes of your time and are guaranteed to get your blood flowing with the spirit of the Massive.

Brad Friedel was the first ever goalkeeper for the Columbus Crew and is one of the best players ever to put on the Black and Gold. He currently plays for Aston Villa, is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the English Premier league and operates a soccer academy in Northeast Ohio. His legendary status as both a club and national team keeper is one to be marveled at as he is unquestionably the most successful Columbus Crew Alum.

So I set off into the internet and an went through the rosters of ever MLS and USL-1 team and compiled a list of players who were born or raised in Ohio. The Second in the Made in Ohio series is the MLS rookie who's off to a great start filling in the backline and showing real promise as a Centerback for the Massive Club. Hailing from Dublin, Ohio he was a standout for the Ohio State University mens soccer team that made it all the way to the National Championship game in his senior year. Brunner turned down a contract from New Jersey and after a year sharpening his skills down in the minors has returned home to Columbus to play for the team he grew up watching. So without further delay here's our Tribute to the Hometown hero in the making Eric Brunner.

These two players may not be the shining stars on this team, but they do the hard work and shovel the coal down in the engine room and keep the team running. One of which is the hard hitting Danny O'rourke. He's a former Herman Trophy winner and native of Worthington, Ohio and can currently be found prowling the back line and central mid of the Columbus Crew.

The Massive club took on the Old Enemy DC United saturday and the end result was an unfortunate Tie. DC's defenders played all out to get in front of Crew shots all through the first half and then dominated the second. The one thing they couldn't stop was Alejandro Moreno's shot off a great flick on header by Steven "Lucky" Lenhart to equalize. Off the field the tailgate this week featured a Live band, Drunken Kickball, Flip Cup, The best Brats from the Union and The best Taco's from La Turbina. All and All it was a great time off the field and a decent but not great result on. Still though the Crew haven't lost at home for well over a year now.

This game was the most amazing match I've ever been too. A totally dominating performance by the Massive Club over the second place revs. A grudge against the team that lead to so much controversy and earlier in the year. Getting kicked out for throwing my paper and tinfoil Machete on the Corner, followed by walking right back in the other gate. And finally being able to take a few of my buddies to their first Crew games and having them witness the enormity of the Columbus Crew and the Nordecke. The only thing that can truly sum up this game can be said in eight little words. Top of the league and Havin' a laugh.

The Following is the last I will post on this outrageous subject but I feel since people still visit my site via that pot of Lies at MLSR it is fitting. Aside from inflammatory and false remarks the author of that site posted here is proof provided by "Foosinho" of big soccer that she also provided doctored images in an attempt to intentionally discredit me.

Recently MLS Rumors has made serious and totally baseless statements accusing me of amongst other things being a nazi. These are serious allegations which have made me quite furious, to accuse someone of something like that without ever speaking to that person is outrageous. I am seriously offended by this I can not believe a site that portrays itself as an MLS news and rumors site would make such inflammatory and baseless statements. My images are just for fun and more based off old russian and soviet pictures. MLSR has become nothing more than a worthless inflammatory site that is making slanderous statements without any thought to what they mean or having checked any of their so called "facts". Anyone who has seen my site via their links I invite you to check my posts and challenge you to find any racist statements or nazi insignia. Also Should the "writer" over at MLSR accept crewture's invite to the podcast I have asked to be another guest speaker. Perhaps hiding behind the shroud of internet anonymity makes it easy to say such erroneous things but calling me that to my face is something else entirely. DC Road Trippin' (Part-2)

Well after the saga that was the trip down we finally made it down to RFK. Now this took a ride from a cop, instruction from two DC kids that made me feel like an idiot, and a conversation with several Barra Bravan's on the escalator trip out of the Metro. But we did make it to the game and thankfully Jericho made it to see at least half. So here ya are the shots from the game. Sorry if they're not as good as the pics from CCS. Well this weekend was one of the most ridiculous I've had in a long time. But after all the madness We made it back home with three points and a hell of a story. But more importantly I was sober enough for this trip to take pictures. But I took a bit to many, and I'm dividing it into two part. The first part will take it right up to the march in, so without further delay...

We all know the best thing to do on the interwebs is to buy crazy things. With this in mind I figured I'd give it a go. So here it is the long un-awaited Ultra Internet Store! Now this isn't me sitting here with an iron and blank t-shirts no sir, this is me posting different things that my brain craps out to a site that will make custom items. With this site even you can have an internet store! But more importantly you can buy my stuff, and I get a cut. A tiny cut but a but a cut none the less. Now I will be posting more random things later on however for the moment I only have six things for you to blow your cash on. The way the site works is I receive a small percentage of all purchases and once that reaches twenty five bucks or so they cut me a check.

Also two of the items on their are HSH and Union logo clad, and for any profit I make off those items I will give to the groups to help fund, beer, streamers, smoke bombs and kickbacks to the FO to keep Blake from being kicked out again.
